Please Microsoft - read these posts more closely.
The LEGACY RDC works as it always has. You find it in the 'Windows Accesorries' menu element. It is native in Win 10.
The DOWNLOADABLE RDC is on the Store. It is new - and it is broken.
These are TWO different programs that do similar tasks to those of you not familiar with the legacy version.
Microsoft - read the posts again. The Store version is defective and will not allow for a copy and paste function from the server to the client. A very necessary function. This needs to be fixed asap.
The App discovery tool will not find a problem with the Store version as the Store version is functioning as it was designed to function. Your advice was poor advice. READ THE POSTS!
The legacy RDC works as in the past. There is no need to download it. Run it and insert your credentials and life is good.
The NEW STORE version is supposed to be more user friendly, but it lacks capabilities. If MS fixes the problems it would be a preferred app to use in my view as tabbing between sessions is easier.
I am sure there are other users who have discovered more issues with the STORE version. I have quit using it as it will not C&P.
I am anxious to hear more about the proposed update to the Win 10 Store RDC.
One last irritation...publish the version of the app in a Help-About menu item so we know what we are running.
I have created a database with SQL Server Management Studio, I would like to now use it in my C# application. I need the connection string?
Where can I find the connection string, and where is my database stored?
Do I have to publish it or something like that, or is it in my documents somewhere?
How do I obtain the connection string? Where can I find the connection string to copy paste into the above section?
How to I publish my database so that Visual Studio can pick it up? Then I can just pull the connection string of there?
The easiest way to get the connection string is using the 'Server Explorer' window in Visual Studio (menu View, Server Explorer) and connect to the server from that window.
Then you can see the connection string in the properties of the connected server (choose the connection and press F4 or Alt+Enter or choose Properties on the right click menu).
Advanced connection string settings: when creating the connection, you can modify any of the advanced connection string options, like MARS, resiliency, timeot, pooling configuration, etc. by clicking on the 'Advanced..' button on the bottom of the 'Add connection' dialog. You can access this dialog later by right clicking the Data Connection, and choosing 'Modify connection..'. The available advanced options vary by server type.
If you create the database using SQL Server Management Studio, the database will be created in a server instance, so that, to deploy your application you'll have to make a backup of the database and deploy it in the deployment SQL Server. Alternatively, you can use a data file using SQL Server Express (localDB in SQL Server 2012), that will be easily distributed with your app.
I.e. if it's an ASP.NET app, there's an App_Datafolder. If you right click it you can add a new element, which can be a SQL Server Database. This file will be on that folder, will work with SQL Express, and will be easy to deploy. You need SQL Express / localDB installed on your machine for this to work.
A very simple way to retrieve a connection string, is to create a text file, change the extension from .txt to .udl.
Double-clicking the .udl file will open the Data Link Properties wizard.
Configure and test the connection to your database server.
Close the wizard and open the .udl file with the text editor of your choice and simply copy the connection string (without the Provider=<driver>
part) to use it in your C# application.

If you want to specify username and password you can adopt from other answers.
Tutorial: https://teusje.wordpress.com/2012/02/21/how-to-test-an-sql-server-connection/
On connectionstrings.com you can find the connection string for every DB provider. A connection string is built up with certain attributes/properties and their values. For SQL server 2008, it looks like this (standard, which is what you'll need here):
on myServerAddress
, write the name of your installed instance (by default it's .SQLEXPRESS
for SQL Server Express edition). Initial catalog = your database name, you'll see it in SSMS on the left after connecting. The rest speaks for itself.
edit
You will need to omit username and password for windows authentication and add Integrated Security=SSPI
.
My solution was to use excel (2010).
In a new worksheet, select a cell, then:
put in the server name, select table, etc,
When you get to the 'Import Data' dialog,
click on Properties in the 'Connection Properties' dialog,
select the 'Definition' tab.
And there Excel nicely displays the Connection String for copying
(or even Export Connection File..)
put below tag in web.config file in configuration node
then you can use above connectionstring, e.g.
If one uses the tool Linqpad, after one connects to a target database from the connections one can get a connection string to use.
Properties
Advanced
Copy Full Connection String to Clipboard
Result: Data Source=.jabberwocky;Integrated Security=SSPI;Initial Catalog=Rasa;app=LINQPad
Remove the app=LinqPad
depending on the drivers and other items such as Server
instead of source, you may need to adjust the driver to suit the target operation; but it gives one a launching pad.
The sql server database will be stored by default in the following path
, where <drive>
is the installation drive and X is the instance number (MSSQL.1 for the first instance of the Database Engine). Inorder to provide the connection string you should know what is the server name of the sql server database, where you have stored followed by instance of the database server.
Generally the server name will be like the ip address of the machine where the database is attached and the default instance will be SqlExpress
A connection string contains Data Source name i.e., server name, Initial catalog i.e., database name, user id i.e., login user id of the database, password i.e., login password of the database.
If you created Connection Manager in your project then you can simply pull the connection string from there.

Like many people who work for a company that's located hundreds of miles from their home, I rely on remote-access programs, specifically the Remote Desktop Connection utility built into Windows. I recently encountered a relatively common bug in the program: in the midst of a remote session, I lost the ability to copy and paste.
Closing and restarting the remote connection fixed the problem temporarily. A more permanent solution is described by Pinal Dave on the SQL Authority blog. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and click Start Task Manager. Choose the Processes tab, select rdpclip.exe, click End Process, and close Task Manager. Restart the process by clicking Start > Run (just Start in Vista and Win7), typing rdpclip.exe, and pressing Enter.
Malware, apps may block browser copy/past functions
The inability to copy and paste text and images in your browser may indicate the presence of malware or some other program that has locked the Clipboard. The Mozillazine knowledge base points the finger at a particular Registry value: AppInit_DLLs, which is located at HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWindows.
The Mozillazine article instructs you to delete that Registry key, but only after you attempt to decipher the key's value to discern the name of the program that installed the key. Two of the most likely culprits, according to the article, are the pushow (pop-up show) and New.net malware.
Whenever you suspect your PC may be infected, run Malwarebytes' free Anti-Malware utility to detect and remove the infection. Last September, I described how I used the program to disinfect our family PC.
Create a shortcut that empties the Clipboard
The fastest way to erase the contents of the Clipboard is to copy anything else, even a blank space. But you can also create a shortcut that empties the Clipboard automatically. In Vista and Windows 7, right-click the desktop or any convenient folder and choose New > Shortcut. Type the following command in the shortcut location box:
cmd /c 'echo off | clip'
Click Next, give the shortcut a name, and click Finish. Now right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, assign a keystroke combination to the shortcut (if you wish), choose Minimized in the Run drop-down menu, and click OK.
If you'd like to extend your Clipboard's capabilities, you'll find dozens of free and commercial Clipboard enhancers described at Download.com, but my favorite for working with text is the free ClipClipper from Currach Software.
The program lets you edit and save the contents of the Clipboard and place your saved Clipboard items into categories, but only some of the text's formatting is preserved, and the utility doesn't accommodate images at all. If you're willing to spend $19.99, BegemotSoft's Clipdiary creates a record of all the text and graphics you place in the Clipboard.
ftp://yourLoginName@IPaddress
instead of a normal web page URL.
The FTP site of the Computer Science department at CSU requires theuser to use sftp, the secure version of FTP. Just type sftpinstead of ftp, when you are using FTP in a terminal window.
ftpmachinename
where machinename is the full machine name of the remote machine,e.g., purcell.cs.colostate.edu. If the name of the machine is unknown, you may type
ftpmachinennumber
where machinennumber is the net address of the remote machine,e.g., 129.82.45.181. In either case, this command is similar tologging onto the remote machine. If theremote machine has been reachedsuccessfully, FTP responds by asking for a loginnameand password.
When you enter your own loginname and password for theremote machine, it returns the promptftp>
and permits you access to your own home directoryon the remote machine. You should be able to move around in your owndirectory and to copy files to and from your local machineusing the FTP interface commands given on the following page.
to request help or information about the FTP commands | ||
ascii | to set the mode of file transfer to ASCII (this is the default and transmits seven bits per character) | |
---|---|---|
binary | to set the mode of file transfer to binary (the binary mode transmits all eight bits per byte and thus provides less chance of a transmission error and must be used to transmit files other than ASCII files) | |
bye | to exit the FTP environment (same as quit) | |
cd | to change directory on the remote machine | |
close | to terminate a connection with another computer | |
delete | to delete (remove) a file in the current remote directory (same as rm in UNIX) | |
get | to copy one file from the remote machine to the local machine | |
help | to request a list of all available FTP commands | |
lcd | to change directory on your local machine (same as UNIX cd) | |
ls | to list the names of the files in the current remote directory | |
mkdir | to make a new directory within the current remote directory | |
mget | to copy multiple files from the remote machine to the local machine; you are prompted for a y/n answer before transferring each file | |
mput | to copy multiple files from the local machine to the remote machine; you are prompted for a y/n answer before transferring each file | |
open | to open a connection with another computer | |
